# **The GIMP**

The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free open-source program that provides advanced digital image editing. It is similar to Photoshop but is much simpler to use. Unlike Photoshop, however, GIMP is designed to be portable, much like the Apple operating system, by relying on _package management._ This is because it doesn’t allow programs to be downloaded individually and installed on your computer. Instead, the program is installed using a compressed file format called a _binary package._ This makes it easy to use because you can then move the package to any computer that is running an operating system that can read the binary format.

Other than storing your images in a folder, Photoshop Elements can save them automatically as a JPEG, PNG or TIFF file in a memory card, USB stick or cloud for a backup.

Photoshop software works on the image file that has an extension of.PSD or.PSB. It allows you to create, edit and save high-quality image files. It has more than 25 image editing features and supports specialised features like RAW or photographic editing. Photoshop also has an extensive collection of specialised tools for editing photographs, images and videos.

Adobe Photoshop software is available in both desktop and portable versions. You can find a desktop version for Windows, Mac, Linux, and web OS. There is also a mobile version that supports iPhone and Android devices.

Adobe Photoshop software is available from a single store but you can download its free trial version from any of its product websites and use it for 30 days for free.

Adobe Photoshop Elements software is also available on a single website, but you can download its free version on any computer for 30 days.

These instructions apply to Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Photoshop Touch versions.

Before you start

Before you begin installing and running Photoshop on your computer, you need to install the required software. You should also install the free trial version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

You need a Microsoft Windows operating system to use Adobe Photoshop. You can use Photoshop Elements if you have a Mac OS operating system instead of a Windows operating system. We explain how to install Photoshop software and Photoshop Elements in the sections that follow.

Installing Photoshop software

Photoshop software is available in two forms: a full version and a free version. You can install the free version only if your computer doesn’t have a full version installed.

Adobe Photoshop software is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. If you are running a 32-bit operating system on a 64-bit computer, then you can install the full Photoshop version. You can install both 32-bit and 64-bit Photoshop on 64-bit operating systems.

If you are installing Photoshop Elements software on your computer, you need to use Adobe’s Windows operating system.

Adobe Photoshop software can be installed using either Windows installer or Standalone Software installer. Standalone Software installer is an installer for the Adobe software that can be used to install the software on a single computer and it doesn’t need

## Practice: Using the Brush Tool

• Open up a new document and save it as `sketch.psd` or something along those lines.

• Select the Brush tool (B) and start to paint a shape or texture onto your new document. Figure 4-3 shows how to start painting with the Brush tool.

• When the Brush opens, hold down the Alt key to change between the Oil and Water Paint modes (see Figure 4-4). Clicking again will switch back to the original mode of your choice.

• It’s best to choose a Brush Preset from the right side of the Brush panel that works well for the type of image you’re working on (see Figure 4-5).

• You can click the Eyedropper in the Tool Options ( on the Options bar) to quickly have Photoshop sample the current color. It works like a magic light bulb, prompting Photoshop to sample the current color of the image.

• You can use the Brush settings to modify the properties of the brush strokes, such as opacity and size.
