**Layers**

The first thing to understand about Photoshop is that it is a layer-based application. With layers, you work on a collection of images called a _stack._ You can apply all these layers to a single layer as a finished image or you can assemble them as you apply them to different layers. You can apply image manipulations to individual layers and apply specific layers to certain areas of a composition. Layers are also commonly used to create and manipulate basic compositional elements, such as light sources, shadows, or darks in a photo.

Photoshop allows you to add adjustment layers, blend layers, and create selections. These are the tools that allow you to make the creative and manipulations you see in this book.

Let’s start with what it can do and then we’ll take a closer look into the various options that are available.

What Is Elements?

Adobe Photoshop Elements is a graphic editor application for the desktop. It was launched by Adobe in 2004 and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

It is designed to be a simple alternative to the standard Adobe Photoshop. It is very quick and easy to use. There are basic editing options like Adjust Color, Blur, Brightness and Contrast, and Red-Eye Removal. And of course, you also have the option to Change Channel, Split Toning, and Color Table.

There are more options available if you use the Adobe Photoshop plug-in called PS Elements Plug-ins. These are accessed from the “Tools” menu.

Starting with version 13, Adobe Photoshop Elements now offers multiple editing possibilities. You can edit multiple images at once, use the Video (Editing) tool, add layers, make selections, change the color balance, add text, and so much more. It also has a High-Quality view and Cropping tool that allows you to crop an image and work on large files.

Adobe Photoshop Elements can export files in the common formats such as TIFF, JPEG, GIF, PSD, JPG, PDF, PNG and more.

How To Use Elements

To use Elements, you first need to open it. If you installed it, you will find the program in your Start Menu.

Most of the features are found in the Edit menu. Open it and you will notice the numerous tools. Most of them you have probably used in Photoshop.

You can use all the tools in the edit menu, or you can use the tools that come with the software. It is a great way to start your editing process.

Open the first image you want to edit, and then select an area of the image. Elements will automatically show the area in the preview window.

If you want to edit a rectangular area, simply place the cursor on the area you want to edit, and then press the left mouse button once.

Let go of the mouse button after you make a selection, or the selection will be removed. With Elements you can either use the selection from the box, use the magic wand to make a selection, or use the rectangle selection tool.
